He gave you wrong information, probably in an attempt to get more profit if and when you trade in your car. If your car is fixed to the point it was at before the accident, there is no loss of value.
Look at it this way, you have a 3 year old car, with a 3 year old hood. You get in an accident, and your 3 year old hood is damaged and replaced with a brand new hood. Where is the loss?
The dealer is right that carfax will get the information. But the repairs have to put the car back to pre-accident condition. That means all brand new parts. This will not take away the diminished value, but with new parts and a professional repair, the car won’t decrease in value either.
But what the dealer s wrong about is having to tell anyone you are selling it to that it was in an accident. The dealer won’t unless you ask.
As far as getting anything more from the at fault insurance company, you will probably need a notarized document from the dealer that tells how much the same car with the same mileage is worth without the damage claim. Then request that they make up that difference as well.
Most insurance companies do not report to Carfax. I know the one I work for does not.
If you have the car repaired at a dealership…they will probably report to Carfax. (Dealers report to Carfax every time you have them change the oil). But most private (non-dealer) body shops do not report to Carfax.
In reality, Carfax actually shows very little. Most of the “hits” you get on it are vehicle registrations and service work at dealers. If the car was rendered a total loss and a salvage title issued, that will show on Carfax because the state will report stuff like a title being issued or a registration being renewed.
Insurance companies do not report to Carfax. We have no reason to. There is absolutely no benefit for an insurance company to tell Carfax claim information. Insurance companies take their obligation to protect your data seriously.
Insurance companies do report to ISO. This is a data base that many insurance companies report to in order to prevent fraud. ISO can not be accessed by car dealers, car sellers or private citizens. Only by participating insurance companies.
Additionally, the value of the car goes down…only if you sell it.
What you are talking about is diminished value. A car that was in an airbag deployed collision is worth less than the same car that was not damaged. Most insurance companies will resist paying for diminished value, you may need to get a lawyer to sue the person that hit you. You would need an appraisal from a dealer or automotive professional stating the difference between the value of your repaired vehicle and a comparable, non damaged vehicle.
It sounds as if the car guy is trying to pick up your car for peanuts. Have it fixed, drive it, no one will ever know the difference. Cars are in accidents every day. relax !
Make a claim for diminished value with the at-fault insurance company. If you can prove that the value has decreased, you can recover for that monetarily. It’s not going to help you sell the vehicle, but it is compensation.
