In our schools today, there are problems that take the focus
off education and make it more difficult for a student to learn. Some of
these problems include, discrimination, violence, expenses, but the major
one is fashion extremes.
The wearing of school uniforms has been known as a
tradition of most private schools and not so much in public schools
but however, School uniforms can be much more, they can also
eliminate the problems that arise and distract students from the main
focus of school, their education. Many teens believe that school uniforms
are infringement of their right , and that they have the freedom to choose
their own clothing but the courts however have made it clear to students that, they do not
have the same rights in school as they do outside.
Even though some people might argue that the wearing of uniforms
keeps children from maturity, it has also been known to keep kids safe
from many dangers like rape and other assaults around schools since
kids are not allowed to dress inappropriately.
There have been many challenges that goes on when
school officials are deciding whether kids should wear uniforms in
schools or not. A phone survey conducted by the National Association
OF Elementary School Principles featuring seven hundred and fifty – five
school principles showed that ,twenty-one percent of all public schools had
a uniform policy, and seventy-one percent of the seven hundred and fifty-
five schools represented did not require uniforms and were not considering
requiring them. This survey shows the seventy –one percent of those
principles are putting the future of the kids in their schools in a risk .
This is because, the clothes children wear to school have a
psychological effect on their behavior. Kids tend to act to reflect the way they
are dressed so if there is no dress code and kids dress anyhow, that alone can
give a bad impression to people about the school. The wearing of school uniforms also
puts an end to the competition in latest fashion. Competition in fashion
among teens is an uprising problem since some they will do anything to
get the best labels in fashion if it even means stealing, bulling others or
even prostitution. Uniforms in schools also tells
students that they are in an organized place and it also helps prepare
them for the future jobs which involves wearing of a dress code. It also improves the
performances in school since kids will not be distracted by their sparkly wardrobe.
I grew up in a very religious school which had a very strict
dress code. Students were not allowed to wear anything that showed
their back , chests and any other places that was not appropriate to show
in school . I was not a fan of the dress code because I felt that it kept us from
expressing ourselves through our outfit, but I grew to know that, the uniform we
wore was for our own protection from the bad people in the community.
Uniform wearing should be adopted in all schools
especially in high school because teens do not only act rebellious through
their language but they also do this through their fashion. So if school officials
adopt this idea, it will help minimize such bad behaviors and also even help limit
sexual harassment in schools. Adoption of uniforms will also help cut the
budget and safe money for other important needs needed for school.
