FWY: The Hard Disk is your hard drive which is what all your files and Windows Xp/Vista/7 is loaded onto. And yes it will wipe your hard drive
Technically NO, generally YES.
If you have the Recovery disks it will put it back as it was when you bought it.
If someone was so inclined, they could scan the hard disk and try and recover the data back.
If you want to be ultra cautious, Google killdisk, download and run that, then use the Recovery CD.
No, that would only reformat, which would leave some data for anyone interested enough to look for it.
Download and burn http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd to a CD, then boot from that and use Data Shredder to completely erase all data.
to be absolutly sure your safe, 2 steps. (just to make it easier for you)
1 use the recovery cd’s and reinstall windows.
2 google ‘file shredder’ download and install, and then do a free space wipe.
thats about it.
you could also do this method. the none reinstalling windows method.
1 uninstall all your programs that you dont want to go with the laptop, especially ones that you bought or hold a password like a messenger.
2 make sure you delete your documents, favorites folders and any other files you dont want to go with the laptop, pictures and videos too.
3 download CCleaner
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
run it and clear out all your cache’s, make sure you check the passwords and coockies in the application tab, and in the other tab with the internet browsers.
4 download File Shredder, and run the free space wipe, you could also use this to delete your files securly, but you will still have to do the free space wipe.
The hard disk is the part of your laptop where all of your programs and information are stored. Reformatting and reinstalling the from the discs you have will give the appearance that none of your information remains. Identity thieves, hackers and law enforcement computer forensic experts know that that is not quite true.
I use a program called DBAN (Darik’s Boot And Nuke) that does what it’s name implies. It obliterates everything that is on your drive by overwriting every possible place where your programs and information were several times. It can take up to several hours, but when it’s done there is nothing recoverable left. You then can use your discs to reformat and reinstall.
